SHORT-EARED OWL

February 2009 - Denver Holt holds a male Great Horned Owl, while Kristen Keyes examines the wing.  This individual was caught incidentally while trying to catch and band Long-eared Owls for an ongoing study, but proved an interesting individual to examine once in the hand.  Note how the seventh primary is considerably darker than all the rest, suggesting it is the only one that has been replaced, whereas among the secondaries most feathers look dark and fresh, though there are a few that contrast sharply with the rest by being noticeably paler (and of an older generation).   (Photo by Marcel Gahbauer)
