SHORT-EARED OWL

February 2004 - A closeup view of the test backpack in position on the owl.  Note the three points of attachment where the neoprene harness is sewn together.  The single attachment near the top of the photo is just below the neck; as the thread biodegrades over time, this will break free, allowing the rest of the harness to slide down off the bird's back (the bottom stitching will be reinforced to prevent it from coming undone).  (Photo by Marcel Gahbauer)
