FALL
SCHEDULE 2012 - OWL BANDING |
Click here for the passerine (morning) banding schedule |
Below
is the current schedule for the fall 2012 Saw-whet Owl banding program. Note that McGill campus security locks the gate to the Arboretum not long after sunset, therefore it is important to arrive at the meeting time listed for each date. Our standard approach is to have the nets open for four hours, beginning roughly a half hour after sunset. Taking into account closing of nets and banding any owls from the final round, departure time is on average around five hours after the meeting time. On nights when owl migration appears to be strong, banding may continue longer, but volunteers are not obligated to stay beyond the standard period.
Note that because owl migration is quite weather dependent, we will not operate on nights with rain or strong winds. The bander-in-charge will assess conditions each afternoon, and will by 3 pm post a note on the MBO Twitter page indicating whether owling is taking place that evening. All volunteers are responsible for checking on the status prior to coming out.
Volunteer scheduling is being coordinated through WhenToHelp, a software package that allows you to directly register your own shifts and view the most current schedule at any time. To register for access to WhenToHelp, e-mail us at mbo@migrationresearch.org.
