February 2009 - This male Long-eared Owl was caught and banded as part of a long-term study of the species being led by Denver Holt at the Owl Research Institute in Montana. When MRF first reviewed potential research programs in 2002, Long-eared Owls were considered, but ultimately the priority was placed on Short-eared Owls instead, due to their more precarious conservation status. However, there is still much to learn about Long-eared Owls too, and the potential remains for MRF to expand research on Short-eared Owls at some point into a comparative study of these two related species.
