harness. Note that the dummy backpack being worn is much larger in
all dimensions than a real transmitter would be. There is a wide
range in the size of individual owls, and thus the proportional weight of
a transmitter and harness can also vary considerably. By
experimenting with a backpack that is heavier and bulkier than anything we
would ever use, we hope to test the upper limit of the proportional weight
range; if the test bird fares well with the current backpack, then we can
be confident that a much smaller unit will not pose any problems. (Photo by
