SHORT-EARED OWL

February 2004 - A side view of the captive Short-eared Owl wearing our trial harness.  Note that the dummy backpack being worn is much larger in all dimensions than a real transmitter would be.  There is a wide range in the size of individual owls, and thus the proportional weight of a transmitter and harness can also vary considerably.  By experimenting with a backpack that is heavier and bulkier than anything we would ever use, we hope to test the upper limit of the proportional weight range; if the test bird fares well with the current backpack, then we can be confident that a much smaller unit will not pose any problems.  (Photo by Marcel Gahbauer)
