PEREGRINE FALCON

June 12, 2005:  This was the oldest of the three chicks as judged by plumage (i.e. the greatest amount of down already lost) at approximately 31 days.  At 705 grams, it was above-average in size for a male, just as the female was also heavier than expected.  These birds have been fed well!  Brief physical inspections of them uncovered the usual collection of feather mites that are almost always present, but little else - they seemed perfectly healthy and alert to us.  (Photo by Marcel Gahbauer)
